How long has Donning been in business?
The Donning Company Publishers began in 1974 when the company's founders published a pictorial history of their hometown. The volume was an immediate success. Using our innovative marketing techniques, The Donning Company in the following years would bring the award-winning "Portraits of America" series to cities, counties, states and regions from Alaska to Florida, Maine to Hawaii.

What types of books do you publish?
We publish limited-edition commemorative volumes, pictorial histories, and contemporary portraits. A Donning limited edition offers you an opportunity to help create a permanent record of your community, business or association, multicultural heritage, country club, or college or university in a handsome coffee table book featuring hundreds of captioned archival photographs with complementary text.

What services does the Donning Company Publishers provide?
The Donning Company Publishers offers a turnkey publishing operation that delivers the complete package. Donning locates the beneficiary, contracts with the author, and secures financial sponsorship. When the manuscript is completed, our professional staff takes special care in editing and designing the book. Typesetting, printing, and binding take place at our state-of-the-art production facility. Throughout the project, our experienced marketing staff assists you in developing and implementing marketing strategies tailored to the special needs of each community.

What is the role of the Beneficiary in the book project?
The Beneficiary is a nonprofit organization who receives the proceeds from book sales and aids in finding an author, locating sponsorship, and marketing the book. The book project is of no cost to the beneficiary group. Donning guides the Beneficiary with successful marketing strategies and personally assists in devising a pre-publication and distribution plan. Additionally, we provide camera-ready artwork for items such as brochures, statement stuffers, posters and display advertising.

What is the role of the Sponsor in the book project?
Donning secures financial sponsorship from the business community. Our Sponsors are local companies or financial institutions with an interest in serving and promoting the community. These organizations underwrite publications for public relations value and the benefits of sponsorship include long-term recognition in the community, promotional tie-ins, and 100 percent recoupment of their investment.

What is the role of the Author in the book project?
Donning contracts with the Author, who is responsible for conducting research, securing photographs, and preparing the manuscript. We assign an in-house editor to provide guidelines, monitor deadlines, and works with the Author throughout the manuscript preparation period. An Author is generally given up to one year to complete the manuscript. Upon submission of an acceptable manuscript, Donning will produce the finished volume within six months.

All photographs and images submitted to Donning
should be at least 300 DPI!

While it is usually close, the color you see on your screen is not the color your photographs will actually print!

CMYK is a term printing companies use to say something is to be printed in full color.

CMYK stands for Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black.

A 2 page spread means two pages that are printed
side-by-side in your book.

Even numbered pages are on the left page of a book, and odd numbers are on the right!

Bleed means that the ink on a page extends to the
very edge of that page.

A book setup that is taller than it is wide is
called a portrait layout.

A book setup that is wider than it is tall is
called a landscape layout.
